Maurizio Zuluaga

Maurizio Zuluaga is a prolific artist, writer and film maker living and working in Jersey City and NYC, he takes much of his iconic subject matter from history books, comic books, printed media, movies, found objects, print work, signs, photography, internet, dreams, etc, and incorporates luring themes of pop imagery with in surreal elements that build a rich symbolic and vibrant lexicon in its layers. His work carries many different socio-political, sub-cultural and historic themes that play with styles diverting from pop, abstract, cubism, pointillism, figurative, collage, assemblage, neo-expressionism and street techniques consisting of stencils, graffiti, calligraphy, wheat paste and printed ephemera. His art is heterogeneous and constantly pursuits an approach of 'controlled chaos' as he mixes it with new mediums and incorporates an urban street art style that often shows in his work. All of these elements combined give an ephemeral transition that carries many patterns and juxtaposed figures on large format paintings and murals that bring you in to dream-worlds which fuse a dystopian and euphoric encounter within context that is also subversive, poetic and mythical.
